Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 13-01-2010

Today is considered as the festival of ‘Bhogi’ by you. On this day, you throw out all the old and broken objects and keep new things in your homes. Stop, and think a little about the inner meaning behind this, which is – that we must root out our bad habits and qualities on this day. You must realize that it is not restricted to the material objects- they are only symbolic of the true meaning. We must then transform ourselves for the better and become better human beings. We must throw out bad habits, qualities and traits. Then while thinking deeply about the celebration of Pongal and Mattu Pongal, agriculture in reality, does not occupy as large a section of the population as it used to. There are many reasons for this. The most important being the tendency of society to move towards destructive styles of modern living.
This is a day of thanksgiving to Mother Earth (Bhooma Devi) and Devi Annapoorni. These three days are to root out all old evils during Bhogi, seek improved ways of living and make it an occasion for thanksgiving. It is meaningless to celebrate the festival with a lot of fuss without understanding the inner significance.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 17-12-2009

There is a question I heard. It is a good question – a meaningful one – one I myself would like to explore. “What is the mind?” is the question. This is a difficult question. There needs to be several explanations related to this. First we need to refer to the Koshas surrounding the body. One of them is the ‘Manomaya Kosha’. The thoughts of the mind contribute to this Astral layer.
This however is not a complete definition because the question is: “What is the mind?”. Your intentions, thoughts and the ‘vasanas’ or soul imprints of your previous births come with you. These when stimulated become thoughts. These thoughts become driving forces of your minds. All the thoughts that you have had during this birth becomes your mind. The mind is not a separate entity. So to purify the mind we must always cultivate good thoughts. I do understand that those assembled here are making suitable efforts. Still the mind is like the ‘Vethalam’ from the story of ‘King Vikram and the Vethalam’. Each time we discipline it only to find it going back to its original position and eluding a permanent change. This happens repeatedly. Do not lose hearts. Keep trying to bring it under control. You can purify the mind by this method.
In another religion they call it the ‘Holy Spirit’. This depicts a ‘pure state of mind’. It would be a mistake to understand it otherwise. The person’s mind, determines his or her personality. This decides whether he succeeds or fails in his or her life. So the primary duty of a person is to strengthen his or her mind. There is a proverb “There is no need of mantras for a perfect mind”. I would like to emphasize here ‘There is nothing that the mind cannot achieve’. If you make a decision and do all that is necessary to achieve it you will certainly do so. This is the truth.
To achieve this you have to first strengthen your mind. Do not waste time in searching for your mind. You know now that your mind is nothing other than your intentions, thoughts and the vasanas of your previous births. When a person says that his or her mind is suffering, that he or she is unhappy – they should stop this unnecessary suffering by telling themselves: “Where is the mind which I feel is suffering – If I desire so – it will no longer exist. It is really in my mind to decide whether I want to suffer or not. It is my thoughts, my desires, my intentions that are making me suffer. If I submit all these at the feet of the Lord and beg Him to help me purify these or get rid of them. I shall certainly succeed. So I declare God in his compassion is listening to each of us however undeserving we may be and grants us His blessings.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 19-11-2009

Today I shall answer one question in particular: “Starting from the stage of having Bhakthi (faith) what must a person accomplish to become a devotee?” Since there is some confusion about the terms in English, I shall give a short explanation in the same language. I would like to define the word “devotee” .

Who is a Devotee?
You do not become a devotee by claiming to be one. The one who concentrates on one particular God can be described as devout. Such a person, due to faith and self surrender, is aware of God’s presence during all his actions and dedicates them to Him. Thus he becomes a devotee. In Tamil we say, “a bhakthan claims to have bakthi”. The first stage is when a bhakthan has faith. The next stage is when he involves himself totally in the service of God through meditation and japam and becomes a devotee. A devout person may not be a devotee. A person who spends all his time worshiping with his mind body and soul is transformed into a devotee. He can be called a devotee due to the action between the two stages. In Tamil a devotee is called an ‘adigal’. I hope I have made myself clear. I presume there will be no further confusion.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 23-10-2009

I would like to shed a little light on something. Someone asked me, “A Jayanthi is a birthday which is connected with happiness. So it has become a practice to celebrate it. But why is Mukthi Day celebrated? How does it benefit us?”. This is a good question because there is a special relevance. Generally birth brings about happiness to everyone (parents and other family members) apart from the infant herself or himself. Where the infant is concerned it marks the share of its troubles! On the other hand Mukthi or death gives a person liberation from problems. So I would say it should be celebrated to be in keeping with spiritual tradition.
Gnanis help so many people in many ways. Sometimes the beneficiary is aware of it and sometimes he does not even know it. To praise and thank the great saints on their day of Mukthi is a fitting and commendable practice. It so happens that when they visit you in astral state some impurities get attached to them. During times of Aradhanai these impurities are shed because of the pooja performed, the mantras that are chanted and the aarthis. This is an opportunity for you to do them a small service of purification. This is my explanation.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 26-09-2009

Some of you feel that when you go for darshan of a great saint, automatically, like magic all difficulties or ailments will disappear – that those whom we go to meet should be without these problems. This is incorrect. Everyone is subject to some problem or ailment according to his karma. There is no avoiding this. Even great saints have borne the suffering of ailments to complete their karma. We all know that saints too have gone through difficult times. Only they differ from the rest of you in not letting these upset them or make them unhappy. Their soul awareness protects them from experiencing the pain of their physical self. You must also seek to reach this state and not imagine that by going to worship or meet great souls you can remove misfortune or ailments in the family. Such thinking would be very wrong. The Law of Nature will take its course. This you must fully realize. The purpose of meeting saints is to develop your spiritual selves and reach a state of mind that remains unaffected by the difficulties you have to face.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 29-08-2009

What is the true meaning of the phrase: Edupaarkaipillai?” There is a meaning apart from the one commonly understood. Referring to a common usage, by lifting a child he or she does not become yours automatically. That only amounts to stealing. Only when you fulfill all your responsibilities towards a child does he or she become yours.
Now coming to the origin of the phrase, it was: Edupaar Kayappu Illaaai, (Kayapu means Kasappu or bitterness). This could translate as: Edupaarikku kayappu illai. Those who take on the responsibility of service to the divine will have no reason for bitterness or remorse. If on the other hand you feel that by taking on a responsibility you are suffering some kind of loss then the responsibility will go into someone else’s charge. If it is a child, the child will go into someone else’s keeping. If you are not wholeheartedly participating in discharging the responsibility and choose to withdraw from it; it can lead you into problems.

I would like to answer a question someone has asked: “I have everything – more money than I need, a home to live in yet why do I not have the peace of mind?” (Amaithi). Separate the word into three syllables (a-mai-thi). Only after you have put out the fire (thee or thi) can you get amaithi or peace. This is the reason. There is an inner fire in each of you. This makes you want to achieve several goals. If you are not able to do this, you lose your peace of mind. You are discontented with what you have. Instead tell yourself, there are so many with less than what I have. I should be grateful that God has given me so much.
If you do not adopt this way of thinking you will only keep seeking more and more. It becomes endless and peace will always seem to evade you. “What should I do to get past this?” we may ask.

1) First maintain your physical health. Your arms, legs eyes and ears should all be in good condition. There are so many without even this!
2) There is a roof over your head. There are those without even this. They live exposed to the sun and the rain. There are people living under trees! Think of this.
3) There are people without even one meal a day. If you contemplate on this you will realize how blessed you are. The more you adopt this way of thinking the more you shall peace. This is my explanation.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 06-07-2009

Some seem to ask, “Why are we not able to meditate?”. Is it meditation which is eluding you or are you just not trying hard enough? I may ask. It is my opinion that sufficient efforts have not been made. You say you don’t know how to meditate. From birth to death you keep passing through meditative states. Because you are constantly thinking and concentrating on something all the time. Please allocate some of your concentration towards God and this is my explanation. An easy method I have mentioned before: Say ‘Om’ when you inhale and say the name of your favourite deity when you exhale mentally. It is not only my opinion but also that of the saints living in modern times. This breathing technique not only helps in achieving meditative states but also is the cure for many ailments. Why do you hesitate to implement this good advice? If you can practice just this you can achieve great spiritual heights.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 15-04-2009

I need to reply to a strange question. “When the mind becomes very powerful what is the need for rituals or poojas?”. There is in fact a proverb, “When the mind is strong where is the need for mantras?”. Till the mind reaches that stage of strength pooja’s are a necessity. I would like to explain: it is because there are rules to be followed which in turn can increase your concentration and devotion step by step the mind becomes strong until it becomes so powerful that pooja’s are not a necessity. Still I would say outward worship and prayers lead to inner worship. It starts us on the path and can bring immense results. This I have said several times but only few seem to follow it. The general feeling is that they cannot find time during the day for this.
In twenty four hours can one not find twenty minutes for the worship of God? Don’t push it aside thinking it takes up much time. Morning and evening you should put aside time for mental worship and make it a habit. This will bring great benefits. All the practices of worship and related Kriya and actions are only to strengthen your mind.
