Though no one has posed a question, I have one for you. They say “Meditate like the sky”. What does this mean? Generally man when he thinks of God looks upwards towards the sky. People of other religious speak of God as ‘Father in heaven’. Some wonder “Does God really come down from the skies?”. Those practicing Yoga can perhaps find the meaning easily. In the human body the Sahasrara is the sky. It can be said that when a person’s thoughts reach the level of the Sahasrara he has realized God. In this state we can say that God resides in the sky and the heaven is above. There is another reason too. Since ancient times man has worshiped the sun, the giver of light, as God. This practice holds good even to this day. I eagerly await further interpretations from those assembled here.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message Moolam Pooja 26-01-2006

A friend of mine asked me a question: “The Vedas say karma is handed down from one lifetime to the next. I have heard that we reap the results of our Karma sometimes immediately in this birth and sometimes in the following births. Which of these two is true?” was the question asked.
They talk about the effects of Karma. Karma means ‘action’. We reap an equivalent result for every action. In this Kaliyugam, we reap the effects of our karma immediately. However, the Vedas say you experience the effects of the karma of your previous births. Why do they say this and is this correct? Is what the Vedas say, true? Will we see the effects of our actions in this lifetime itself?
Gurunathar Thirumoolar further explains: the farmer sows three kinds of seeds at the same time: the first a variety of greens, the second paddy (or rice) and the third a palm tree. All three are sown at the same time. The greens can be plucked in a fortnight or month, the rice can be harvested after six months and the palm yields fruit only in the third generation. Similarly the result of our karma solely depends on the kinds of actions we perform. What actions we sow in this birth we reap immediately. We have the choice to influence the karmic effects of this birth. What we experience from the previous births are major sins.
Based on this is the proverb “Arasan Indru Kolvan. Deivam Nindru Kollum” (The power of the ruler’s judgment is limited to the present, while the ultimate divine judgment may come delayed). We experience the effects of major sins, in a delayed manner in the subsequent births. This is the general law of karma but the ultimate discretion rests with Lord Shankaran.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message – Moolam Pooja 30-12-2005

“I saw Him as the Merciful One I also realized He was the same as the God in Me”.
Once again today the same answer to the oft repeated questions. “If God is within us why should we worship Him in different forms and in several temples?” Would not the cow’s milk that we pour over the idols of God be better used to be fed to the infants?” These days it is not just the common man who asks this question but also wise men and ascetics. Obviously they have not fully understood the significance of such a practice. Without doubt God is in every being. But to what degree is each person spirited of Godly? (It varies according to the individual). After thinking deeply on this I gave the answer to the question. To follow the path of spirituality we need purity. To tap man’s potential for faith God is represented in different forms. Till a man’s inner eye is opened he has only his physical eyes to perceive God. He can believe in the existence of something only if he sees it with his physical eyes. Therefore God is given a physical form.

Similarly the practicing of performing Homams came into being. Man could see the Sun and began to worship the Sun as God. He made offerings of what he ate to the Sun God but could see no evidence of God taking the offerings. The heat generated by the Sun was also created by the fire so he equated fire with God and offered his Neiveidhiyam to Agni Bhaghavan. It was believed that man can make offerings to God through fire. This is how the practice began.

After this man’s creative mind gave God many forms. The practice of performing special ceremonies and chanting prayers before installing these idols (Prana pratishtha) made them a reservoir of divine energy that would flow out to bless those who worship them. It is advisable that a devotee begins to reduce the number of forms which he worships and tries to concentrate on one or two forms. Finally he must concentrate on the God in him and achieve bliss (through meditation). This will result in self realization and the sublimation of his soul to Godhood which is the only true apotheosis. To gain this realization of Godhood it often takes several births and long periods of time. Till such time it is advisable that a person consistently and continuously worships the idols of God and step by step till he reaches a higher level. It is like creating a bond of affection and love and later getting released from this bond.

Soon after a child is born he understands the bond of affection. He cries out “amma”. Then he prefers to be with his mother rather than anyone else. Then he begins to recognize his father, siblings, grandparents and other relations and enjoys their affection. After some time he learns to feel an aptitude for prayer and worship of God.

To step beyond this affectionate worship or kind of devotion and turn from external prayers to internal prayers is not an easy step. However for a person who reaches this stage everything becomes smooth. Till such a stage is reached external worship is a must. I would say temples are like a blind man’s white stick. There are some spiritually blind people for whom temples are necessary. More important since temples are built according to the rules of the Agamas there are beneficial rays of energy that spread throughout the temple and have a curative value for physical and mental distress if we sit in the temples for a while. We cannot deny this. There is a practice that in every village people would sit for a while in temples every day. I cannot see much of this practice new.

However it is interesting to note that the younger generation has become more spiritually aware and ambitious. What I tell the younger ones is that if the progress step by step from worship of idols they will reap suitable benefits. Questioning such practices will only postpone their spiritual development; time will be wasted and they cannot achieve complete wisdom. As the Shasthras say one must go from worshiping the forms to worshiping the formless. They must progress from Sthoolam (physical) to Sushman (subtle or invisible). “First understand your body. Then comprehend the presence of God in your body. Understand earth and then the energy within the earth”. Such have been the instructions handed down to us by our ancestors. It is to help us understand this philosophy that frequent

reference is made to the creation ground. Dust returns to dust. Nothing is permanent. Everything is transient. This is the lesson we learn. Similarly idols made of stones are off value as long as they are worshiped. Afterwards they lose their value. There are many neglected temples in ruins as a testimony of this fact. However none of our prayers are wasted. These practices help stabilize our minds. To those who worship with complete faith no harm will come and only benefits will reach them.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message – Moolam Pooja 03-12-2005

Some have asked “All we asked was for water to drink. Why has there been so much of flooding” It is true you have asked only for drinking water. However mankind has harmed nature to a great extent. He has destroyed trees without reason. He has interfered with natural waterways and built houses that have blocked them. The five elements could not tolerate this any longer. Till now they have been patient, now in turn they are showing their strength. Not only in this nation, but all over the world such natural calamities due to the elements (earth, fire, water, wind and ether) will take place. In such a situation my advice to those assembled here is that for the next twenty days do not venture to the affected areas. Definitely polluted air will cause illness, disease and death. Though this is alarming news, we have to accept and understand this as part of nature’s scheme of things.

As I mentioned before, if all of you had prayed for the welfare of those who are affected or for their protection, you might have been able to mitigate the effect of nature’s fury. Without realizing the importance of this, people have not made the required effort through prayer. Moreover I have heard people asking for rain repeatedly but I haven’t heard them asking for protection from the fury of the elements. This is regrettable.

When they see one of their kinds in danger even animals and insects become united in their efforts to protect them. They share whatever food they find. Why is it that amidst all of God’s creation man alone has changed? Why is he selfish? Is it because he is afraid that once he helps he might be called on again and again to help? This is also typical of the Kali Yugam when a person helps someone, instead of inspiring gratitude, he is considered easy prey and some try to take maximum advantage of him. With whom can I find fault in the situation? All this is a part of God’s divine play.

Gurunathar’s Divine Message – Moolam Pooja 05-11-2005

I shall reply to a special question. A friend observed a snake trying to swallow a frog. If he saves the frog, he becomes guilty of depriving the snake of its food. If he lets it swallow the frog, he wonders if he is guilty of not saving the life of the frog. In this situation what is the right action to do? It is law of nature that one living being becomes the prey of another. Vegetables, greens, fruits etc become the food of humans. Small animals become the prey of large animals. This is according to nature. So let us not interfere with this. It is sufficient if we streamline our actions so that they yield positive results to those around us. This is my explanation.
